WALKING & WAYFINDING

What others are saying about the book:

"The book is a practical and meditative tool for harnessing the potency of walking. It invites the reader to create a healthful and contemplative practice for one's body, heart, and mind."

—Maileen Hamto, Reedsy Discovery Reviewer and curator of "Colors of Influence" book blog.

"It's a beautifully crafted resource for anyone looking to deepen their mindfulness practice through the simple yet profound act of walking. Highly recommended for its clarity, depth, and inspirational content."

—Dharamvir, Reedsy Reader Review

"Appleton does a wonderful job of encouraging us to action through her book, even structuring each chapter to be framed around a walk. The writing prompts at the end of each chapter are insightful without being too demanding of readers who are just now starting their walking or journaling journey."

—Leslie Anne Smith, Reader Views Reviewer

"This book is consistently interactive and its information exceptionally accessible."

—From the Foreword by Sharon Rae Graff, author of Haiku Gratitude.

"She has given us a path into the simplest of spiritual practices. And the very simplicity of the form opens us to the Universe of Truth and Beauty that flows in and through and around every moment of our winding pilgrimage through this world."

—Andrew Dreitcer, VP for Academics and Dean of the Faculty at Claremont School of Theology

"This book is a star in the night sky of our lives' sea journey. It orients us; and helps us find our way."
—Frank Rogers Jr., professor of spiritual formation at the Claremont School of Theology and author of Cradled in the Arms of Compassion: A Spiritual Journey from Trauma to Recovery.

The Story of Wayfinding Days

Wayfinding Days emerged following my DIY Pilgrimage I did in 2022, after my trip with my sister to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain was cancelled in May 2020, due to COVID-19. In 2022, I decided to create my own pilgrimage, so I walked from Long Beach to Solana Beach, with a little help from the train through Camp Pendleton. My sister, my husband, and my 83 year-old father each walked one of those days with me and it was truly a wonderful experience.

The next year, I created my own solo Wayfinding Day from Santa Monica to Redondo Beach on a Sunday in February. I walked with the intention to notice and reflect and journal my way through the day. I did some of that and I mostly walked in quiet thought. As I shared the DIY Pilgrimage and Wayfinding Day with other people, many responded that they wanted to do something like these mindful & intentional walking experiences. Last summer, I offered the first in-person Wayfinding Days. I also began writing a guide to creating your own walking practice, and it includes tips for doing a DIY Wayfinding Day. The book, Walking & Wayfinding: Create Your Own Mindful Practice, One Step at a Time, is now available in paperback and Kindle e-book on Amazon. Or, check out an e-book copy from your local library!
